２０歳くらいのときにエリック・シーガルという人の『ラブストーリー』という恋愛小説とその映画化が大ヒットしたことがあった。

前にも書いたことがあるが、そのときのキャッチフレーズが

Love is never to say sorry.

というのである。

これを配給会社は「愛とは後悔しないこと」と訳した。

「愛とは後悔しないこと」では、「とにかく後先考えずに情熱に身を任せて突っ走れ」というふうに誰でも理解するだろう。

しかし、意味はまったく違うのである。

この台詞は、身分違いの貧家の娘と結婚した息子を勘当にした大富豪の父親が、夭逝したその娘の葬儀のときに数年ぶりにあった息子に、お悔やみとともに、「I’m sorry」と言うのに対して、息子が顔も見ずに返す言葉なのである。

「もし、あなたが私を愛していたのであれば、あとになって『すまぬ』などと言うような行為をするはずがない。つまり、あなたは息子である私を昔もいまも愛してなどいないのである」という、これは絶縁の言葉なのである。

「愛」というのは、あとで「ごめん」といわねばならないような仕儀に立ち入らないように、一瞬たりとも気を緩めないほどにはりつめた対人関係のことである、ということを私はこのとき学んで、「おおお」と目からウロコを落としたのである。

「愛する」とういうのは「相手の努力で私が快適になる」ような人間関係のことではなく、「私の努力で相手が快適になる」ような人間関係のことなのである。
